G.S. Kostiuk Institute of Psychology of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukrainewas founded on October 1, 1945 by the 1573 Resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic as the Research Institute of Psychology of the UkrSSR. In 1996 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine named the Institute after a prominent Ukrainian psychologist Grygory Sylovych Kostiuk.

The Director of the Institute is Sergiy Dmytrovych Maksimenko, the academician-secretary of the Department of Psychology, Developmental Physiology and Defectology of the NAPS of Ukraine, foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Education and the German Academy of Natural Sciences, Doctor of Psychology, Professor, Ukraine’s State Prize winner, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine.


The missionof the Institute is the conduct of fundamental, applied and other research aimed to solve important methodological, theoretical and applied problems of psychological science and practice.


The main activities of the Institute include:

• development and scientific substantiation of state projects and concepts of education, psychological and pedagogical sciences in Ukraine;

• conduct of research requested by enterprises, institutions and organizations;

• publishing activities, establishment and publication of printed and electronic scientific publications;

• training of highly qualified research and teaching staff in the field of psychological sciences by means of postgraduate (PhD and Doctoral) programs;

• organization and conduct of scientific and practical conferences, seminars, meetings, symposia, congresses, forums, assemblies and other activities to disseminate psychological knowledge and promote the Institute’s work results;

• development of methodological recommendations and technologies for psychological help to managers and employees in organizations from different social sectors (education, civil service, army, business, medicine, etc.) as well as to school and college students and their parents, etc.


The Institute has the following laboratories:

• laboratory of cognitive psychology

• laboratory of methodology and theory of psychology

• laboratory of organizational psychology

• laboratory of new information technologies

• laboratory of developmental psycho-physiology

• laboratory of psychology of socially maladjusted children

• laboratory of social psychology

• laboratory of preschool child psychology

• laboratory of personality psychology named after P.R.  Chamata

• laboratory of environmental psychology

• laboratory of psycho-diagnostics, scientific and psychological information

• laboratory of counseling psychology and psychotherapy

• laboratory of psychology of giftedness

• laboratory of history of psychology named after V.A.  Roments

• laboratory of general and ethnic psychology


The Scientific laboratories are headed by the following leading Ukrainian scientists: members of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctors of Psychology, Professors S.D. Maksymenko, V.O. Molyako, and N.V. Chepeleva, corresponding members of the NAPS of Ukraine, Doctors of Psychology, Professors G.O. Ball, L.M.  Karamushka, and M.L. Smulson, Doctors of Psychology A.M. Grys, O.M. Kokun, N.Yu. Maksymova, V.V. Moskalenko, T.O. Pirozhenko, N.V. Prorok, L.Z. Serdyuk, V.V. Turban, Yu.M. Shvalb and  PhDs Z.G. Kisarchuk, O.L. Muzyka,  and M.-L. Chepa.


G.S. Kostiuk Institute of Psychology is a recognized psychological science center in Ukraine. For almost 70 years it has trained hundreds of specialists of highest qualification - doctors and PhDs. Currently, the Institute has the following PhD and Doctoral programs:

19.00.01 - general psychology, history of psychology

• 19.00.02 – psycho-physiology

• 19.00.03 - work psychology, engineering psychology

• 19.00.04 - medical psychology

• 19.00.05 - social psychology, psychology of social work

• 19.00.07 - pedagogical and developmental psychology

• 19.00.10 - organizational psychology, economic psychology


G.S. Kostiuk Institute of Psychology of the NAPS of Ukraine has two specialized scientific councils for awarding doctor’s and PhD degrees (Specialties: 19.00.01 - General Psychology, History of Psychology; 19.00.02 - psycho-physiology, 19.00.04 - Medical Psychology, 19.00.05 - Social Psychology, Psychology of Social Work 19.00.07 - Pedagogical and Developmental Psychology; 19.00.10 - Organizational Psychology, Economic Psychology).
